-I was told that there is a test that can trace your ancestry? Does anyone know anything about this? I have Native American Indian on both sides of my family and am interested to find out how much I have. The only thing a DNA test can tell is if you have genetic markers in common with samples the testing company has in their database...PERIOD A DNA test cannot tell you who your ancestors were or what Tribe or Nation your supposed Native ancestors were part of... It cannot tell you what your blood quantum is... It CAN tell you what percentage of markers you have in common with samples the testing company has...
It sounds more like you have a Native Blood myth and no proof whatsoever... YOU will have to do the genealogy part of the equation to verify your supposed Native ancestry...
Be careful about the hype you hear on TV. One thing they use saliva (cheek swabs) in doing DNA test as pretty much all your body fluids and tissue contain your DNA.
There are 4 types of DNA that I know of and 3 that are being tested for Ancestry purposes.
Y & X are sex chromosomes and are in a cell's nucleus. Autosomal is what most of your DNA is and is also in a cell's nucleus. Mitochondrial is in the cytoplasm outside the cell.
Y & Mitochondrial both go back in a straight line unchanged and people use them in genealogy if they make contact with another that they feel they share ancestors. By both people having one of them done and if they come up with a perfect match they can share information. Now you get both going back in a straight line. Y if you are male goes to to your father and his direct male line. Mitochondrial if you are male or female goes back to your mother and her direct female line. For both Y & Mitochondrial they will assign you to a Haplogroup based on your DNA and show you the origin of your nomadic ancestors going back thousands of years. However, it is in only those 2 lines and you come from a vast myriad of family lines. You have 2 parents, 4 grandparents, 8 great grandparents, 16 great great grandparents. You get your Y & Mitochondrial each from only ONE person in each generation you go back.
X at present is pretty much impossible to trace. Both males and females get X from their mother but in addition females get X from their father.
Most of your DNA is Autosomal which you get 50-50 from both parents but not always 25% from each of your 4 grandparents. The reason why what you inherit can be bias between grandmother and grandfather on both sides of the family. How you inherit any bias will not be how your siblings inherited it. An exception can be for identical twins. It does not go back in a straight line unchanged. There are companies that use Autosomal for ancestral heritage purposes but in the long run they will tell you that you are so much European, so much Amerindian etc. It will not be for specific countries and the American Indian tribes will not allow it to be used for tribal membership. The companies that do this type of testing cannot break the results down by specific tribes. They cannot break any results down by parent without the DNA of one of your parents.
Here are a couple of links.
http://dnatribes.com/
http://www.familytreedna.com/ They will match you going back 6 generations with people they have in their database with Autosomal. That is their Family Finder Test.
On both if you go under "Feedback" at the top there is a way you can email them and ask questions. You should ask as many questions as possible and make sure they understand what you are trying to achieve. DNATribes will show you your top 20 matches in descending order and will give you extended results for an additional fee and it will include specific countries. However, they are not saying you have ancestors from all those countries is that you match to population samples they have in their data base. The results of this type of testing could vary as one company might have samples the other one doesn't. Under further questioning all DNATribes could tell me is that I am about 7/8 European and 1/8 Amerindian.
A DNA test is useful if you want to determine your ethnic origins.

@Joyce. I didn't mention anything about great-great grandparents. I was referring to ethnicity, and I thought that's what the asker wanted to know.

Apologies to all. I've done a little research and I realise just how wrong I was about DNA testing.
Pax vobiscum,
Anna Fransson
A DNA test will not tell you who your great great grandparents were. For that you have to do the research.
