What does this mean for my haplogroup results?

-i participated in the genographic project and my y chromosome haplogroup turned out to be r1b1a2. i believe they only tested 12 of my markers. recently, i found that someone tested all of the markers of my deceased great great grandfather on a surname project.

Now understand, no way does this represent your father's total ancestry. You get your Y from only one person in each generation you go back. Get back to your 8 great great grandfathers, 4 on your father' side and 4 on your mother's, and 7 of them will be excluded from the results and of course none of your 8 great great grandmothers will be included.
dna testing normally is limited to showing what haplogroups are in your genes, and a broad area.

When it is used in a surname project, the intent is to MATCH against other persons, and define if there is a biological relationship. This won't have anything to do with the haplogroup origins. For example, there could be 5 Jones families in the state of New Jersey in the past... by dna testing, it may show that 3 of the persons doing testing SHARE the same markers, and thus are likely to have the same common ancestor. It could then also prove that the other 2 Jones ancestors have no genetic conncections at all.

Just to clarify.. I would guess that your gr gr grandfather did not participate in the testing, since it is a fairly new process. The testing itself would be on a person who is proven to descend from him, since the proof is based in paper documents.

You have to look closer at who else matched grandpa...they will be related to you in some way (unless you have an unknown adoption between you and gr gr grandpa).
